Uttar Pradesh: Sugar mills prepare for mid-October crushing start - ChiniMandi

Bijnor: Sugar mills in Bijnor district are preparing to begin the upcoming sugarcane crushing season around 10 days earlier than usual, with operations likely to start by mid-October, Gaon Junction reported.

Preparations are progressing rapidly across the district, with mill machinery repair and maintenance work estimated to be between 65% and 90% complete. Changiapur sugar mill has made the most progress, with around 90.75% of its preparations completed.

Sugar mills in the district normally begin crushing in the first week of November, while Bilai sugar mill generally starts operations towards the end of October. However, mills across Bijnor are this year preparing for an early start in mid-October in line with the state government’s directions.

Repair and maintenance work is being carried out under the supervision of experts. The rise in sugar prices has also been cited as one of the factors behind preparations for an early start. At the same time, the area under sugarcane cultivation in the district has increased by around 2,000 hectares, while the crop condition is reported to be better than it has been over the past three to four years.

Changiapur sugar mill is currently leading preparations, with cane purchase centres expected to begin functioning from the first week of October.

Bijnor district has around 2.57 lakh hectares under sugarcane cultivation, and mills are expected to receive more than 10 crore quintals of sugarcane this season, compared with around 9 crore quintals last year.

An earlier start to crushing would allow farmers to clear their fields sooner, potentially helping them complete wheat sowing within the required period.

District Cane Officer Brajesh Kumar said repair and maintenance work at the mills is progressing as planned and crushing will begin according to the government’s schedule. He also said there would be no problems related to the issuance of cane supply slips.
