Uttar Pradesh rain: 10 killed, 17 injured as rain floods

Uttar Pradesh faces severe rain disruption as 10 people are killed and 17 injured. Gorakhpur reports deaths, flooding and widespread waterlogging.

Uttar Pradesh is reeling from torrential rain, thunderstorms and strong winds that have killed 10 people and injured 17 across the state, disrupting normal life and causing flooding, waterlogging and damage to homes and crops. As many as 63 districts recorded above-normal rainfall, while the state received 19 times its normal rainfall in the 24 hours preceding Saturday.

Five people were killed in separate mud-wall collapse incidents, while five others died and 14 were injured after trees were uprooted by strong winds and heavy rain, police said. Lakhimpur Kheri, Amethi, Barabanki and Gorakhpur were among the districts reporting casualties.

Gorakhpur hit by flooding, fallen trees

Gorakhpur has emerged as one of the worst-affected areas, with four people killed and 14 injured in incidents involving uprooted trees.

In Campierganj, three people — Subhash, 55, Gyanmati Devi, 45, and Kishan Prajapati, 13 — were killed when an old sal tree fell on a hut in Gajarhiya Tola of Lakshmipur II village around 4 pm. Two others, Rammilan and Sirjavati, suffered serious injuries.

In another incident in Gagaha, a mahua tree fell on Bhim Kumar Vishwakarma near Siyar Mod, killing him.

An around 80-year-old pakad tree also fell on a house in Kali Mandir Gali in Jatepur Dakshini, injuring four people. Around 12 people were inside the house at the time. The tree damaged electricity poles, and power was disconnected before rescue operations began.

Gorakhpur District Magistrate Deepak Meena and Senior Superintendent of Police Kaustubh visited the district hospital to meet the injured. Authorities said relief work and restoration efforts were continuing.

Heavy rain has also left several parts of Gorakhpur severely waterlogged, affecting traffic and everyday activities.

Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan inspected waterlogged areas and said the situation was beginning to improve as water receded from several locations.

"The water is now receding. If the rain stops for two or three hours, the accumulated water will certainly drain away," Kishan said.

He described the rainfall as unusually intense, saying people had not witnessed such heavy rain in the last 15–19 years and comparing it to a cloudburst.

Residents, however, complained that water had remained on roads for several hours, forcing shopkeepers to remove it with buckets.

Heavy rain damages homes and crops

The rain has caused widespread damage across Uttar Pradesh. Government sources said 117 houses were damaged during the past 48 hours, while standing crops have also been affected.

Lucknow recorded 125.8 mm of rain in the 21 hours ending Saturday morning. Banda recorded 227.6 mm, Fatehgarh 224 mm, Nanpara in Bahraich 217 mm, Hardoi 214 mm and Kannauj 204 mm in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am.

In Kannauj, 20 kutcha houses were damaged due to incessant rain, though no deaths were reported.

Waterlogging and traffic disruptions were reported in several areas, particularly in low-lying localities. In Ayodhya, movement was affected around Ram Path, the Ram temple, Hanumangarhi, Kanak Bhawan and the Saryu area.

IMD warns of more heavy rain

The India Meteorological Department had forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places in eastern Uttar Pradesh, with rain and thundershowers also likely at several places on Sunday.

The weather system responsible for the intense rainfall was a depression over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Chhattisgarh. At 5.30 am on Saturday, it was located around 230 km south of Prayagraj and was moving towards southeast Uttar Pradesh.

The IMD said the system was expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over the following 12 hours. It also warned of isolated extremely heavy rain in parts of the central Terai region and a light to moderate flash-flood risk in some watersheds.

Districts on alert

The Uttar Pradesh government has placed district administrations on alert amid the continuing rain and flash-flood risk. Districts considered vulnerable include Gorakhpur, Basti, Ayodhya, Gonda, Hardoi, Lucknow, Barabanki, Amethi, Kaushambi and Chitrakoot, among others.

Schools have been ordered to remain closed in districts under red alert and facing the possibility of flash floods.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed district magistrates to remain vigilant and inspect vulnerable areas. Rescue agencies, including fire services, the Provincial Armed Constabulary, civil defence personnel, home guards and Aapda Mitras, have been asked to remain ready.

Special vigilance has also been ordered in districts bordering Nepal following heavy rainfall there and the possibility of rising river levels.

People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms and lightning and to stay away from trees, open areas and water bodies.

The Relief Commissioner said weather conditions were expected to improve after around 36 hours. The state relief helpline is 1070 for emergency assistance.
