Yogi Adityanath sounds 2027 battle cry, UP Rajya Sabha contest sets election tone
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claimed the "80 versus 20" contest had returned, with 80 per cent of the electorate backing the NDA and 20 per cent with the opposition's PDA.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday linked the latest Rajya Sabha contest in the state to the 2027 Assembly elections, saying it had set the tone for the bigger political battle ahead. He claimed the “80 versus 20” contest had returned, with 80 per cent of the electorate backing the NDA and 20 per cent with the opposition’s PDA.
His remarks came a day after eight BJP candidates and two Samajwadi Party nominees filed papers for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh. With the SP not fielding a third candidate, all 10 nominees are set to be elected unopposed, subject to the completion of the electoral process.
Addressing the “Seva Jyoti Yatra-Viksit Bharat Sankalp Sabha” in Lucknow, Adityanath said, “The Rajya Sabha election (nominations) in Uttar Pradesh showed what the result of the Assembly election is going to be. The 80 versus 20 fight has returned. Eighty per cent are with the NDA and 20 per cent with the PDA, and what is going to happen to the PDA will again be before you.”
He had earlier said that 80 per cent of voters supported good governance under the BJP while 20 per cent would be on the opposite side.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had earlier hinted at fielding a third candidate. But on the last date for filing nominations on Tuesday, he said his party’s focus was not on three seats but on the 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. Yadav had earlier said the party would field a third candidate once it had secured the required numbers.
The BJP candidates who filed their nominations on Tuesday are Dharampal Singh, Prakash Pal, Shruti Gangwar, Vidya Sagar Sonkar, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Radhakant Ojha, Gopi Krishna Pandey and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan.
The SP has nominated veteran leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani. The Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled for October 16, while the terms of the sitting members from the 10 Uttar Pradesh seats will end on November 25.
The BJP’s list includes three OBC leaders, two Dalit leaders, two Brahmins and one Thakur, reflecting an effort to maintain broad social and regional representation ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
The SP, meanwhile, has built its political narrative around PDA — “Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak” — as its social coalition for the 2027 election. In sum, the Rajya Sabha nominations have sharpened the political messaging of both sides well before the next Assembly contest.
