Sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh will have to wait longer for a possible increase in cane prices after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath did not announce a revision in the State Advised Price (SAP) at a press conference following the state cabinet meeting, reported Gaon Junction.

The chief minister said the state had paid more than Rs 3.30 lakh crore to sugarcane farmers over the past nine years, benefiting around 4.8 million farming families. The state currently has 122 operational sugar mills, according to the government.

For the 2025-26 crushing season, Uttar Pradesh fixed the SAP at Rs 400 per quintal for early varieties of sugarcane and Rs 390 per quintal for normal varieties. Farmers have been demanding an increase ahead of the upcoming crushing season, as rising cultivation costs continue to put pressure on their incomes.

The government also said the process of clearing approximately Rs 2,000 crore in outstanding cane dues had been expedited following court orders. However, it did not provide a breakdown of payments already made or a timeline for settling the remaining arrears.

Sugarcane payments are a key concern for farmers in the state, where the crop is an important source of income for millions of households. Timely payments help growers meet cultivation expenses, prepare for subsequent crops and manage household costs.

At the press conference, Adityanath also highlighted the government’s agricultural credit and compensation measures. According to the state government, crop loans worth Rs 13,42,978 crore have been distributed through 55 million Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs), while 7.951 million farmers have received crop-loss compensation. Details of the compensation amount and the period covered were not provided.

The chief minister also cited infrastructure development, including the construction of 2,483 kilometres of national highways across 42 projects at a cost of approximately Rs 60,000 crore. Improved transport infrastructure can help facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, including sugarcane supplied to mills.

However, the cabinet meeting did not bring any announcement on a sugarcane price increase. Farmers will now be looking to the state government’s next decision on revising the SAP and addressing outstanding payments ahead of the new crushing season.
