Muzaffarnagar: The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Apolitical) has demanded that the government announce a sugarcane price of Rs 500 per quintal before the upcoming crushing season, saying farmers need better returns to make cultivation profitable, Nayan Jagriti reported.

A delegation led by the organisation’s national spokesperson Dharmendra Malik met Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Sanjay Prasad at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday and raised several issues affecting farmers.

BKU (Apolitical) chairman Baba Rajendra Singh Malik said the sugarcane price should be fixed at Rs 500 per quintal before mills begin crushing. He said farmers can benefit from cultivation only when they receive a fair price for their produce.

The delegation also sought compensation for farmers whose paddy crops were damaged by rainfall. It raised concerns over the process of increasing the electricity load of domestic connections in rural areas and sought measures to make the process easier.

The farmers’ group also demanded relief for farmers whose vehicles have completed their prescribed period and are being forcibly taken away for scrapping. It called for an effective system to prevent theft of electrical equipment from private tubewells.

According to Malik, Sanjay Prasad heard the delegation’s concerns and assured them that the issues would be addressed. He also said the demand for a sugarcane price of Rs 500 per quintal would be conveyed to the Chief Minister.

The delegation included Baba Rajendra Singh Malik, Dharmendra Malik and former Shamli Sugarcane Committee chairman Omveer Singh.
