Udupi police arrest two Uttar Pradesh natives in theft case

The Udupi City police have arrested two Uttar Pradesh natives, who are allegedly associated with the UP-based Bediya gang, in connection with a house-break theft reported in Ambalpady in Udupi in July.

The police gave the names of the accused as Mohammed Jaffer, 22, and Kadir, 32, both natives of Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh. The police recovered articles worth ₹4.5 lakh from the arrested persons.

In a press note, the police said cash and other articles, in all worth ₹6.1 lakh, were stolen from the house of 70-year-old A.S. Ramamurthy by breaking open the door lock between July 1 and July 9, when he had gone to his daughter’s house in Mangaluru.

Following an investigation, a police team led by Inspector Mahesh Prasad arrested Jaffer on September 2 from a hideout near Udupi’s Indrali railway station. The police recovered ₹1.5 lakh and a mobile phone from him. The police took him to his native place in Uttar Pradesh and recovered articles worth ₹1.06 lakh.

Based on Jaffer’s information, the police arrested Kadir from a hideout in Moodbidri on Friday. The police recovered ₹1.65 lakh, two silver coins worth ₹6,000, five watches worth ₹15,000, and a few other articles.

The police said Jaffer was an accused in a house theft case registered at the Nainital police station in Uttarakhand. Kadir was an accused in six criminal cases, including two house theft cases each registered at Baniyather police station and Moradabad’s Civil Lines police station, both in Uttar Pradesh.
