Uttar Pradesh: Fire destroys 20 acres of sugarcane in Lakhimpur Kheri district - ChiniMandi

A fire caused by the snapping of an 11,000-volt power line destroyed nearly 20 acres of sugarcane in Bhogipur Mani village of Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district, reported Dainik Bhaskar.

Dry leaves caught fire after sparks erupted when the wire snapped, while strong winds caused the flames to spread rapidly, villagers said. Farmers and villagers managed to contain the fire after considerable effort, but the crop had already been destroyed.

The fire destroyed four bighas of sugarcane belonging to Pushpa Devi, one bigha belonging to Satya Prakash, four bighas belonging to Ram Snehi, three bighas belonging to Kushma Devi and two bighas belonging to Sudha Devi. Crops belonging to several other farmers were also damaged.

According to the farmers, they suffered losses of more than Rs 4 lakh in the incident.

The farmers alleged that negligence by the electricity department led to the breakage of the worn-out power line. They said they had previously complained about the condition of the wires, but they were not replaced.

The affected farmers have demanded compensation from the administration. After learning about the incident, a clerk visited the site and assessed the damage. Villagers have also demanded that the electricity department replace the worn-out lines immediately to prevent similar incidents in the future.
